CompareMade of polyethylene, Imhoff tanks are characterized by an external corrugated polyethylene container, a lid, a settler, a separation septum and internal pipes. In the upper compartment of the Imhoff tanks the primary sedimentation of the wastewater takes place, while in the lower one the sludge digestion takes place. In the sedimentation chamber the coarsest sedimentable materials (mud, silt, sand, etc.) begin to collect, which slide on the inclined walls of the hopper and reach, through special holes, the chamber below. In the digestion chamber below, the sludge from the sedimentation chamber undergoes digestion by anaerobic microorganisms. The digested sludge then accumulates at the bottom of the Imhoff tanks where the accumulated material will be emptied periodically. Wastewater leaving the Imhoff pits can be dispersed into the ground by means of a dispersion pit.
